Garmin Edge Explore 3 and Explore 3 Plus: What Changed and Who Should Buy
Garmin announced two new bike computers on October 20, 2026: the Edge Explore 3 and the Edge Explore 3 Plus. They replace the Edge Explore 2 from 2022, and the headline changes are double the battery saver runtime and, on the Plus, a speaker and microphone you can talk to while riding. I have not used either one yet, so everything here comes from Garmin’s own announcement (Oct 20, 2026) and the spec rundown from Garmin Rumors (Oct 20, 2026).
What Garmin actually launched
According to the Garmin Rumors spec list, both models share a 3 inch color touchscreen (360 x 640 pixels), 32 GB of storage, an IPX7 water rating and the usual GPS, GLONASS and Galileo support. They are aimed at riders who care more about maps and getting home safely than about power meter graphs.
Garmin’s suggested list prices are $399.99 for the Edge Explore 3 and $499.99 for the Plus, according to the press release. Garmin Rumors notes the Explore 2 started at $299.99 in 2022, so the base model costs $100 more this time.
Battery life
Battery saver mode now runs up to 48 hours on both models, up from 24 hours on the Explore 2. In heavy use Garmin rates the Explore 3 at 16 hours and the Plus at 14 hours.

The Plus is the interesting one
The Edge Explore 3 Plus adds a speaker and a microphone. You can ask it for a new route, have it read out your ride stats, report a road hazard or switch screens without taking your hands off the bars. It can also send and play voice messages through Garmin Messenger when paired with your phone.
My favourite small detail is the digital bike bell. The speaker can chime to warn people walking ahead of you. For city riders in places like Bengaluru or Mumbai, where a bell gets ignored half the time anyway, I am curious how loud it really is. Garmin also notes that voice commands work in select languages and can vary with riding conditions, so I would not expect it to understand you perfectly in heavy traffic.
According to Garmin Rumors, the Plus is also the only one with Wi-Fi, which makes map updates easier. It weighs 121.5 g against 118.8 g for the base model.

Navigation features on both
These are the bits I would use most on a weekend ride:
- Route options that compare paths by ride time, climbing and bike type
- Up Ahead, which shows the nearest coffee shop, restroom or fuel stop along your route
- Road hazard alerts reported by other Garmin riders, like potholes and closures
- Free Flow Routing, which tries to find roads with fewer stops and junctions
- Pin drop navigation, new this year, which lets you send a pin from Google Maps or Apple Maps on your phone straight to the Edge
Hazard alerts and pin drop need your phone paired with the Garmin Connect app, so this is not a fully standalone setup.
Training, eBikes and safety
Garmin Cycling Coach plans are free, including plans for beginners. If you already own a Garmin watch, Garmin Link connects it automatically each time the Edge turns on and shows your wrist heart rate. eBike riders with Bosch smart systems or SHIMANO E-Bike systems can see battery level and assist mode. Safety features include LiveTrack, incident detection, weather alerts and support for Varia radar and lights.
Should you buy one?
If you ride an Explore 2 and you are happy with it, I would wait. The battery saver bump is nice, but the core maps experience sounds similar.
If you are buying your first proper bike computer and mostly ride for fitness, commuting or touring, the base Explore 3 looks like the sensible pick. Spend the extra $100 on the Plus only if hands-free voice control and voice messages genuinely matter to you, for example on long solo rides.
One thing to watch: Garmin’s release says “available now”, while Garmin Rumors reports that Garmin’s product pages say both will be available to order on October 23. As of October 21, neither model is listed on Amazon US or Amazon India. Garmin has not shared India pricing or a launch date, so I don’t know yet when they will reach India.

I will update this once I get hands-on time, especially to test that speaker on a noisy road.
