New Kindle Colorsoft 2026: Should You Preorder Before the October 28 Ship Date?
Amazon announced its refreshed Kindle lineup on October 1, and BGR reports the new Kindle Colorsoft arrives on October 28. Preorders are open now in the US and a long list of other countries. India is not on that list yet, which makes the buying decision a little different depending on where you live.
I have not used the new Colorsoft myself. Everything below comes from Amazon’s own announcement and early coverage from Digital Trends, India Today and BGR. I’ll tell you what changed, what it costs, and who I think should wait.
What Amazon changed on the Colorsoft
The biggest visible change is the front. The old Colorsoft had a raised bezel around the screen. The new one has a flush front with color running edge to edge, using the same reverse printing method Amazon applied across the whole 2026 lineup.
Under the glass, Amazon says the display uses a light guide with nitride LEDs to push brightness and color, plus an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for faster page turns and higher contrast. Amazon also added micro deflectors in the light guide to cut stray light and a thin optical coating to improve clarity.
The numbers that matter
- 7 inch display, 300 ppi in black and white, 150 ppi in color (Digital Trends)
- 16GB storage on the base model, 32GB on the Signature Edition
- Up to 8 weeks of battery life, according to Amazon (via Digital Trends)
- Thinner and lighter than the previous model
That 150 ppi color figure is worth keeping in mind. Comics and covers will look nice, but color pages will not be as crisp as the black and white text.

Base model or Signature Edition?
The base Colorsoft costs $289.99 in Graphite. The Signature Edition costs $319.99 and comes in Graphite or a new Fig color.
For the extra $30 you get an aluminum body, double the storage, an auto adjusting front light, double tap to turn pages, and pogo pin dock charging. The dock itself is sold separately at $59.99, as India Today reported.
My honest take: if you read a lot of comics or graphic novels, the 32GB is the real reason to step up, since image heavy files fill storage fast. If you mostly read novels, the base model is enough, and frankly a Paperwhite might be the smarter buy.

The price went up
Digital Trends points out that this generation costs $40 more than the previous Colorsoft. That is a real jump for an ereader. You are paying for the flush front and better color, so if the bezel on the older model never bothered you, the old one on sale could be the better deal.
What this means if you live in India
Amazon has not announced an India launch date or India pricing for the 2026 lineup. India Nudge, citing Business Standard, reported that India was not part of the first launch markets.
You will see “expected price” numbers on some Indian price tracker sites. Treat those as guesses until Amazon India lists the device. India Today’s rupee figures, such as about Rs 27,869 for the base Colorsoft, are straight currency conversions of the US price, not Indian prices.
Right now Amazon.in doesn’t list any Colorsoft, old or new, so I would wait for the official India listing.
Accessories worth knowing about
Amazon also launched a few add ons alongside the readers:
- Kindle Click, a $34.99 Bluetooth remote for turning pages
- A Page Turn Cover with physical buttons at $79.99
- A $59.99 Charging Dock for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft Signature Editions
The Click is the one I find most interesting. Amazon says it works with all the new Kindles and any Kindle from 2024 or later, so you may not need a new reader to use it.
Where to buy
Kindle Colorsoft (2026), 16GB
US: Kindle Colorsoft 16GB on Amazon.com, $289.99 preorder as of October 16, ships October 28.
India: Not on Amazon.in yet. I’ll update this once it is listed.
Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition (2026), 32GB
US: Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition 32GB on Amazon.com, $319.99 preorder as of October 16, ships October 28.
India: Not on Amazon.in yet. I’ll update this once it is listed.
Looking for other gadget picks? I liked the Trozk Beeper power bank and the Fanttik T1 Max soldering iron kit.
My take
If you are in the US and you already wanted a color Kindle, preordering now gets you one on October 28 with the fixed bezel and better screen. If you are in India, hold your money until Amazon India posts real pricing. And if you mostly read plain text, skip color entirely and save the difference.
