Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Just Stopped Getting Updates: Here Is How to Move On
By Deepu S
On Tuesday, 13 October 2026, a quiet line appeared in Microsoft’s Windows message center. Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions have reached end of updates. The October 2026 security update was the last one those editions will get.
If you bought a laptop in the last two years and never touched the update settings, there is a fair chance this is you. Nothing breaks today. Your PC still boots, your files are still there. But from November, Microsoft’s monthly security fixes will skip your machine, and that is the part I care about.
So let me walk you through what changed, how to check your own PC, and the small update that fixes it.
What Microsoft actually said
Microsoft’s note on 13 October is short and direct. Devices on 24H2 Home and Pro “will no longer receive monthly security and non-security preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats,” according to the Windows message center. The same note says Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 reached end of updates on the same day.
Microsoft recommends moving to version 26H2 or 25H2 to keep receiving monthly security and quality updates.
Who is not affected yet
If your PC runs Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise or Education, you have another year. Microsoft lists those editions as supported until 12 October 2027. Most home users and small shops run Home or Pro, though, so this mostly lands on families, freelancers and small offices.
The October numbers, in one place
Microsoft’s release information page shows the October security update (KB5127648) shipped on 13 October for every current version:
- 24H2 is now build 26100.9711, and its Home and Pro column reads “End of updates”.
- 25H2 is build 26200.9711 and is supported for Home and Pro until 12 October 2027.
- 26H2 is build 26300.9711 and is supported for Home and Pro until 10 October 2028.
That last line is the useful one. Moving to 26H2 buys you roughly two more years of updates on Home or Pro.
Why the move to 26H2 is small
This is the good news, and it is why I am not worried for most readers. Microsoft released Windows 11 version 26H2 on 29 September 2026, and it arrives as an enablement package for PCs already on 24H2 or 25H2.
In plain words, the new features are already sitting on your PC from earlier monthly updates. The enablement package switches them on. Microsoft’s blog says installation is “similar to a monthly update, requiring only a small download and a quick restart.” That is very different from the old feature upgrades that ate an evening and a good chunk of your data plan.
Installing 26H2 also resets the support clock: 24 months for Home and Pro, 36 months for Enterprise and Education.
Why it may not have shown up for you
Microsoft is rolling 26H2 out in phases. Its blog says it may place “safeguard holds” on devices where it detects a known compatibility issue. So if you open Windows Update and see nothing, that can be normal. It may also mean Microsoft has spotted a driver or app problem on your hardware and is holding the update back until it is fixed.

A word from someone who watches networks for a living
My day job sits close to network detection and response, and an unpatched endpoint is one of the most common weak spots in any network, home or office. Attackers love old builds because the fixes are public. Once a version stops receiving patches, every new Windows flaw becomes a permanent open door on that machine.
If you want a reminder of how fast attackers move these days, my piece on the Ivanti Connect Secure zero-day shows how quickly a known flaw gets used once it is public. Staying on a supported build will not stop everything, but it closes the doors we already know about.

If you are curious about a different desktop altogether, I also wrote up what is new in Ubuntu 26.10.
What to do this weekend
This takes about ten minutes for most people.
- Check your version. Press Windows key + R, type
winverand press Enter. The box shows your version (24H2, 25H2 or 26H2) and your build number. - Check your edition. Go to Settings > System > About and look at “Edition”. If it says Home or Pro and your version is 24H2, you are the person this note is for.
- Turn on early updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update and switch on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available”, as Microsoft suggests.
- Install 26H2 when offered. Click download and install, save your work, and allow the single restart.
- If nothing appears, install the October update first, then check again over the next few days. If your PC stays stuck on 24H2, look up your version on Microsoft’s Windows release health pages for any safeguard hold notes.
- Help one other person. Parents, in-laws and the office reception PC are the machines nobody updates. Do theirs too.
Small office with a handful of Pro laptops? Do one machine first, use it for a day with your usual apps and printer, then roll the rest.
